St. Nicholas Orthodox Academy Has a New Biology Class!

October 31, 2019

This year our high school students get to enjoy a one-year-long Biology 2 course that is focused on equine biology! Our 2 new mini horses have been great volunteers for our children to get hands-on learning during the field study of this course. This course is an entry-level course designed to explore the equine sciences and horse husbandry. The course consists of a theoretical component in the classroom and a practical component in the stable. Students learn about horses and the businesses that depend on them.

Topics of instruction include:

  • Equine science
  • Breeds and breeding
  • Selection and conformation
  • Nutrition and feeding
  • Facilities and stable management
  • Handling
  • Health management
  • Pregnancy care

Furthermore, since one of our mini horses is pregnant and expecting in April of 2020, our students have been learning how to care for and prepare mom for the new foal’s arrival, as well as post-foaling!

Our students are thoroughly enjoying the opportunity for hands-on experience with 2 mini horses housed in a private stable facility right next door to the school!
